Maker Spaces 2017-2018
February - Morphi
This month we built in 3D on the iPads in an App. called Morphi. Students learned how to use the App and how to recognize if the objects they created could actually be printed in 3D. They had to consider size and many other factors if it was actually able to be printed. We have a 3D printer at the school so we were able to print a couple of key chains and will be printing some of the other projects in the near future. Here is some samples of students busy creating.

December - Card Making
This month students got to show their creativity and they got to make a card for a friend, teacher or loved one. Some students wanted to be challenged more so I showed them how to create pop up cards and they had a blast trying to create them. They really had to put their problem solving skills to work to figure out ways to fold and cut the paper to make the kinds of pop ups that they wanted. They found it a challenge to do a pop up heart.

November - Comic Book Challenge
The challenge was to try and create a grade group comic that had a story line. It was a difficult challenge because each Maker Space day was a new group of students that had to pick up where their peers left off in the comic. It was a challenge trying to figure out where the last group was taking the characters in the comic. Here is a sample of one of the comics.

October - Marshmallow Challenge
This month we had a building challenge. The challenge. You have 18 minutes to build the tallest free standing tower that you can with the following supplies. 20 sticks of spaghetti, 3 feet of masking tape, 3 feet of string and one marshmallow. Your marshmallow must be at the top in the end. The judges will measure from the table top to the top of your marshmallow. Tallest free standing structure will be the winner. It was amazing to watch them be creative with their ideas and to find ways to solve problems when their structures flopped over from the weight of the marshmallow. Here are a few of their designs.

September - Building with Different Kinds of Materials
This month students were given the chance to try many different types of building as a warm up of building challenges to come. They were challenged to put together different levels of puzzles, they were able to show their creativity by making play-doh creations, they were able to build with lego, they could explore problem solving skills by building with gears (real or on an iPad) and they could build words or codes on an osmo. Here are some pictures from the month.
